Old Wrekinian Rugby Success

There has been a high degree of anticipation since last year’s successful maiden appearance at the Cronk Cunis Festival in Richmond, London.

On arrival in London the 21 OWs attended a BBQ along with the travelling supporters. The bespoke Jerseys were awarded (with a sponsor this year NBC Group Ltd, OW’s Bradley (T. 08-15) & Peter Thornton (B. 80-84)).

There were some changes to the format of the Competition this year, the main one being the introduction of a 12 a side tournament to cater for those teams unable to raise a full squad. The team therefore found themselves in the main competition facing the big rugby playing Schools.

The pool matches were highly competitive. Despite losing all three, there was never more than one score between the sides. All our opposition (KCS Wimbledon, Royal Grammar School High Wycombe and Dulwich College) were past Tournament winners and regularly strong performers in the Schools, Rugby Championships.

In the semi-final of the Bowl Competition the OWs were beaten in the last minute by a moment of magic from the Skinners/Judd Schools’ combination fly-half.

We had therefore reached the final of the Vase Competition and with the withdrawal of our opponents, Eastbourne College, with not enough fit players for a match, we had gone one better than last year, winning by a walk-over.
