SENIOR DEPARTMENT
The transition into Year 3 can be a little daunting for some children, which is why we aim to make it as seamless and happy as possible. The children gradually become more and more independent as they are nurtured through this first phase of the Senior Department. In Year 3, the children continue to spend much of their time with their own class teacher but have specialist teaching in Design and Technology, I.C.T., P.E. Games and Swimming, French and Religious Studies. Pupils are setted according to ability in Mathematics throughout the Senior Department and in English, setting begins in Year 4.
As the children move through the Key Stage 2 years (7 to 11), they experience a tutorial system where they see specialist teachers for all subjects. Individual Form Tutors are responsible for their pastoral care and guide them through aspects of day to day organisation.
During Year 5, parents are encouraged to begin thinking about senior schooling for their children. The Headmaster and Senior Management Team work closely with parents in selecting the right senior schools for their children. Senior schools are invited to give presentations to parents on a biannual basis, which parents from all years are invited to attend.
Year 6 pupils are 'prepared' for senior school entrance examinations from September onwards. The ‘entrance examination season’ usually begins shortly after Christmas, when the children sit for entrance into a wide variety of day and boarding schools.
