Art is a well-established department at Wrekin and we have a proud heritage of excellence and inclusivity. Art has the potential to enrich everyone’s life and for our pupils the subject complements other areas of the school curriculum. The department reflects the diversity of the subject and we aim to encourage not just the development of technical skills, but also a critical awareness of the world that surrounds us. The purpose-built art school provides space for painting and drawing, graphic design, pottery, sculpture, photography and film. Many of the spaces are also used for presenting and displaying pupils’ work throughout the school year.

  • To develop each pupil’s imaginative, analytical and practical skills to enable them to communicate ideas and fulfil their creative impulses in original artefacts
  • To encourage pupils to express their ideas and feelings and build the skills necessary for them to do so
  • To help all pupils become more aware of, and respond creatively to their environment
  • To help them understand the role and influence of the visual media


  • To teach pupils to communicate visually and to create artefacts in two and three dimensions in a wide range of materials during their first three years at Wrekin
  • To promote all aspects of Art and Design as a subject within the school, using our exhibitions to communicate our ethos and pupils'achievements
  • To enhance appreciation and understanding of the role of artists and designers in society and broaden the experience of pupils and staff by bringing relevant studies into each project
  • To promote art as a career for suitable, well-motivated pupils; or to achieve a necessary qualification for others, (particularly during the Lower Sixth year)
  • To develop links with other subjects
  • To use the National Curriculum and exam board Schemes of Work to broaden our own curriculum
